Autism Education Trust (AET) Training sessions

We are pleased to hold the licence to deliver AET Training for Schools and Post-16 Settings within Buckinghamshire. 

Autism Education Trust Training is fully accredited and may be booked individually or delivered within individual settings. 

Some of this training has an associated cost.

The courses are:

Making Sense of Autism

Making Sense of Autism

Gain a better understanding and awareness of autism and the way it affects children and young people in school.

Who is this training for?

This training is a raising awareness module for everyone working in schools.  This includes teaching and support staff, office and ancillary staff, caterers, caretakers, transport staff and governors.

What will you learn?

  • Enhance your understanding and awareness of autism and how autism can affect children in schools
  • Know the importance of understanding the individual person and their profile of strengths and needs
  • Identify potential barriers to learning for autistic individuals
  • Begin to make reasonable adjustments in the way you support autistic learners
  • Reflect on the information you need to collect for creating a one-page profile

Date and Costs

This training is delivered onsite at a time convenient to yourself and is free of charge provided all staff within a setting are being trained at the same time. Please contact sts@buckinghamshire.gov.uk for further information.

Good Autism Practice

Good Autism Practice

Gain practical knowledge and discover hands-on tools and techniques to support autistic children and young people within your setting.

Who is this training for?

This training is for practitioners who work directly with autistic children and young people in schools.  It provides guidance on processes and tools that can help practitioners to implement good autism practice.

What will you learn?

  • Develop your knowledge and understanding of good autism practice
  • Reflect on and improve your practice in working with autistic pupils
  • Understand strategies and approaches you can draw upon for autistic pupils you work with
  • Reflect on the on the information you need to collect for creating a person-centred education plan
  • Consider how to involve the autistic learner and their family in setting learning goals

Understanding Anxiety

Understanding Anxiety

This module will provide delegates with an understanding of what we mean by anxiety, how it appears in autistic pupils, what the key triggers are and what delegates can do to support autistic children and young people to prevent and reduce anxiety.

Who is this training for?

This training is suitable for practitioners working with children and young people in mainstream schools.  This may include: Teachers, Teaching assistants and SENDCo's.

What will you learn?

The training will support delegates to understand:

  • How autistic pupils might express anxiety
  • What can cause anxiety in autistic pupils
  • What you can do to prevent and reduce anxiety in autistic pupils

Autism and Inclusion

Autism and Inclusion

This module aims to provide delegates with the knowledge to understand the exclusion process and distinguish between lawful and unlawful exclusions with a view to promoting inclusion and consider underlying causes of distressed behaviour. There is opportunity to reflect on practice and the role of the school community in avoiding incidents occurring. 

Who is this training for?

This training is suitable for SENDCo's and those working in leadership positions alongside pupils aged 5-16 in mainstream and specialist settings.

What will you learn?

The training will support delegates to understand:

  • Understand a headteacher’s power to suspend or permanently exclude an autistic pupil and other elements of the exclusion process.
  • Explain the relevance of equality legislation on exclusion.
  • Distinguish between lawful and unlawful exclusions.
  • Support autistic pupils by offering alternatives to exclusions.
  • Identify possible triggers of distressed behaviour and support pupils appropriately to avoid escalation
  • Understand the duty to make reasonable adjustments, as a way of avoiding incidents that could otherwise lead to exclusion.
  • Identify ways to ensure a successful reintegration/transition back to school to avoid future exclusions.

The Progression Framework

The Progression Framework

Gain an overview of the Autism Education Trust (AET) Autism Progression Framework, a progress tracking tool available from the AET website.

Who is this training for?

This training is suitable for practitioners working with autistic learners. This may include: teachers, SENCo's, individuals with responsibility for assessment processes, school leaders, SENCo's and outreach or advisory service representatives.

What will you learn?

The training is best delivered in a hands-on practical way so working individually or in small groups you will be guided through assessing one of your students to:

  • Become familiar with the key features and content of the AET Progression Framework document
  • Learn how to use the AET Progression Framework to identify priorities and set learning intentions for individuals
  • Use the AET Progression Framework to provide evidence of progress

Developing Inclusive Leadership in Schools

Developing Inclusive Leadership in Schools

This module aims to equip leaders with the knowledge, understanding and practical strategies to develop inclusive schools that support the learning and wellbeing of autistic children and young people.  The training session guides participants through the suite of resources available for leadership teams to create and embed culture change across their provision. The resources will support leaders to fully embed the 8 principles of good autism practice as outlined in the Good Autism Practice report and support schools on their journey to becoming an outstanding and inclusive setting.

Who is this training for?

This training is for leaders and leadership teams within primary and secondary mainstream schools.

What will you learn?

  • Develop your understanding of the AET Competency Standards and Progression Frameworks
  • Consider the Good Autism Practice (GAP) Report - Guldberg et al (2019)
  • Understand the need for change to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of autistic children and young people
  • Understand the educational policy and legislation related to inclusion and how this must steer vision, strategy and actions in school
  • Begin to develop an action plan for your setting

Schools will also receive follow up support from Specialist Teachers to help embed the learning and ensure action plans are robust enough to achieve real change.

Transitions in Schools

Transitions in Schools

This module aims to provide delegates with the knowledge, skills and understanding to plan transitions and implement processes to improve the education and wellbeing of autistic children in schools.

Who is this training for?

This training is suitable for any member of staff working with autistic pupils aged 5-16yrs in mainstream schools.

What will you learn?

The module will help delegates to:

  • Identify examples of school transitions and understand whether these might be described as ‘macro’ or ‘micro’. 
  • Understand the demands of transitions across the Primary and Secondary school phases for all children but especially autistic children and young 
  • Be able to identify why autistic children and young people require enhanced support to reduce the negative impact of transitions on their education and
