Understanding and Supporting Social Interactions

These courses are for teachers and support staff who want to enhance their skills and knowledge in supporting the social development of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) within schools.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand what is meant by ‘social communication’
  • To develop an understanding of the common social challenges experienced by students with SEND at school and beyond.
  • To explore why we teach social skills.
  • To focus on practical ways to support social interactions and facilitate positive and meaningful social interactions for pupils with SEND in the classroom.
  • To learn how to use social cartooning and social scripts to support students with their understanding and interpretation of the social environment, including looking at what people might be feeling and their intentions, as well as reading social cues and social problem-solving.
  • To focus on supporting social skills through emotional literacy, setting up social skills groups, building attention skills, modelling and scaffolding conversations and using games to support turn-taking and social skills.
